What inspectors actually check
The four-inch sphere test at every gap including under the bottom rail. The 48-inch measurement from outside finished grade, not from a planter or seawall cap. Gate swing direction. Self-closing from any open position. Self-latching without a manual push. Latch height. Absence of external handholds and footholds within the barrier. Any lounge chair, A/C condenser or planter within 36 inches of the barrier that gives a child a boost.

Removable mesh versus permanent aluminum
Removable mesh is the right answer when you want the pool deck open for entertaining and closed when children are present, and it installs in a day with small core holes in the deck. Permanent aluminum is the right answer when the barrier is the property line, when an HOA requires a uniform look, or when you want zero ongoing handling. Many clients run both: aluminum on the perimeter and mesh around the water.
